Ashland Minimanhole and Minitunnel (Gallery 11)

Ashland is a north-south street at 1600 W. On the North side, it eventually merges into Clark street and starts again at 6500 N.

Ashland tunnel north of Montrose street really isn't a tunnel, it's just a small pipe. Ashland south of Montrose, though, is where it starts to get bigger, but the tunnel is still small.

The following manholes are south of Foster street, going towards Lawrence. I haven't been able to find any north of Foster..

Part 1: Ashland manholes, Foster to Montrose.

May 3, 2009 marks my 1 year anniversary of exploring the sewers! But my earliest photos date back to May 4, 2008, that are still saved.

After the 5:53 p.m. photo, as I was bending down to take the photo down the opening of the lid, a police car just drove past me on Ashland, so heck, I left the area. Didn't want a '3rd' encounter with the police regarding the sewers.

Part 2: the following is Ashland tunnel south of Montrose. And now finally there are steps!

May 3, 2009 6:55 a.m.

It was not really possible to go down this 1, since the lid was surrounded in all directions by bushes except for the street, so I had to go down the next 1.

The next 1 is right south of Cullom, 4300 N.

3:15 a.m.

3:16 a.m. With my tape measured, I measured how deep it is to around the bottom after I came out. 10 feet!

3:17 a.m.

It actually kind of smelled down there. The strong sulfur smell.

This is the view south.

3:18 a.m. And of course, what you all been waiting for, the view North. Unfortunately, I'm too far south (1 block) to actually view where it becomes a pipe.

3:19 a.m. The view up.

3:20 a.m.

3:29 a.m. And it was actually light raining at the time.

I've personally taken the Ashland bus from 1200 N. Division and up to the end, and I saw a lot of manhole covers along the way. I expect the tunnels to be bigger. ;)
